Point Sails is owned and operated by Chip Buck and Daron
White. Together, with Chip as the
chief designer and Daron as the operations manager, they co-ordinate the design
and production of sailboat sails for all sizes and styles of sailboats.
Chip Buck, through his nearly 20 years of sail making, has
worked for North Sails One Design, Hobie Cat and ran his own loft. Chip
learned sailmaking during the summer of 1988 from Daron White while the two
lived and windsurfed in the Columbia River Gorge. Chip started Point Sails in 1991 in his hometown of San Diego designing and
building windsurfing sails. In 1995 Chip put Point Sails on the shelf to
go to work for the Hobie Cat Company to run their sail loft. At Hobie, he
digitized their entire sail inventory for computer cutting, re-training their
sail makers and re-worked the loft for a more efficient workflow. Three years
later Chip re-opened Point Sails and devoted all of his energy to sailboat
sails. In 2006 he spun his beach
cat business into a separate brand named
Whirlwind Sails.
Daron White started his sailmaking career out of college in
the 80’s by designing and building windsurfing and small boat sails.
Daron continued to make sails for a
number of years, transitioning into larger boat sails by working for an existing
loft. In the 90’s Daron was drawn
into the IT industry. During this
time, though a mix of employment and consulting, he designed and built computer
applications for small and large financial institutions including Prudential
Securities, TradeSoft and Euro Brokers.
Recently Daron re-joined Chip in the sailing world as the primary technical resource to Point Sails and Whirlwind. Daron is currently
working on creating efficiencies for our processes by re-building all web
interfaces and designing our online pricing system. Through out 2009 and beyond, you will
notice continuous improvements to our sites, enhancing your experience with us.
